The redesign of the villagevoice.com is great, at least through the eyes of this non-New Yorker. It’s clean, it’s funky, it’s modern. It uses colour interestingly, the navigation seems transparent, and the advertising slots are kept deliberately loose in a way that seems clunky on some pages but works on most.
The closer you look the more things there are not to like: there’s a pop-up on the front page (at least that’s what Firefox is telling me), and the search isn’t too well signposted (added to which I don’t think they’ve given nearly enough thought to search in general).
But all-in-all I think they’ve given them a great canvas. If they tie up the loose ends and sort search out, it’ll be really good.
